Component discovered, where to put it?

Hello everyone,

since our portafilter machine bursts when the coffee is ground too fine (water leaks from the side), I opened the device and found a component that was lying around wildly inside.

It is the spring with a silicone cap, see Comparable:

Can someone assign the component to its correct place? And how did it get there, it won't have poked all the way through? Above all: how do I get it back in?
