Could it have been a nonfunctioning pump

I was recently trying to fix my girlfriend's machine. She was getting the electrical plug symbol, so I opened it up, cleaned thoroughly, replaced the NTC connectors; I also found that one of the hoses coming out of the pump was clogged with coffee sludge, so I cleaned that as well.

Upon reassembly, when I turned it on, I noticed the machine wasn't recognizing the grounds deposit was in place.

I traced the wires and realized one of them had somehow been cut; so I fixed it.
Turning it on, it was still not recognizing the deposit as being in place (note, I tested the switches for continuity to make sure they are in fact working and they are)

Further, I began noticing that there was water leaking in the back of the machine. On a close inspection, it didn't appear to be any of the hoses or the flowmeter itself that were leaking. Rather, it was like tit was overflowing from somewhere.

I began testing cables and switches and eventually realized one of the leads connecting power to the pump was also broken. I fixed it, but haven't tried to turn the machine on again for testing.

Question is, could the pump being off cause the kind of overflowing I saw, or is it likely there is still some other problem?

P.S. Sorry, I just noticed I had posted this before in the wrong section of the forum.
