Brewers unit cant be put back in machine

I can't return the brewers unit in the machine. The cogs don't line up.. to line them up and insert the brewers unit, part of the unit is sticking out which won't allow the waste unit to be placed back.
Because of this I can't get to the settings of the machine. I keep getting messages to add draws to the machine.
I was hoping to be able to reset the machine somehow?
