Ethiopia is generally known as the home of coffee. It is an unproven story that a shepherd noticed that his goats were unusually active and did not rest during the night because they had eaten the red fruits of a coffee bush. As was apparently customary at that time, the shepherd then went to a monastery and told the abbot about his observation. The monks researched and discovered that the roasted beans could be drunk as an infusion and thus had more energy to pray. Our Ethiopian coffee comes from the Sidamo highland region in the south of the country and is cultivated by a smallholder cooperative at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,200 metres.
