This coffee comes from Heredia in the region of the Valle Central. It consists of a mixture of the Arabica varieties Caturra and Catuai and is cultivated by small farmers at an altitude of 1,300 m. In the mid-19th century, coffee, which was initially only used as an ornamental plant in Costa Rica, was the country's most important export article. This dependence on the coffee market caused many economic problems in the following years. Since then, efforts have been underway to reduce this monocultural dependence.
