Ms Asnakech Thomas is the first woman in Ethiopia to found and manage a coffee cooperative. The district of Amaro in southern Ethiopia was a previously unknown field in the coffee world. This is now changing, because Mrs Thomas is following a consistent path; she is persistently educating small farmers, most of whom are illiterate, about what real quality is and that this is much better value for money on the world market. It only takes fully ripe, red coffee cherries, unripe or overripe goods are consistently discarded. This is how it has managed to win several international awards. Amaro Gayo has meanwhile become a well-known name among speciality coffees.
